The Turkish leader noted that in various parts of the world, especially in the region where Türkiye is located, people are suffering from manifestations of terrorism, conflicts, civil strife, hunger and shortages, which force them to leave their homes.
"Today, the number of people who have left their homes in the world is approaching 110 million people, of which 35.3 million have refugee status, and 62.5 million are internally displaced persons,” the Turkish leader stated.
Erdogan called illegal migration and refugee flows a "global challenge”: "Our stance on illegal migration and refugees is aimed not only at ensuring Türkiye’s national security, but also at protecting people's lives and dignity. Our people have opened doors for centuries to all who fled from oppression. The same attitude manifested itself in response to crises in the region: from Syria to Ukraine,” he stressed.
The politician noted that Türkiye and its people resolutely reject any propaganda of hatred, the ideology of neo-Nazism, xenophobia and enmity towards Muslims, which is spreading from Western countries to other societies like "poison ivy”: "These senile currents reject the rights of other nations, cultures and religions, as a threat to the values of humanism and the shared future of humanity,” he stressed.
The Turkish president called on the international community to take responsibility on this issue: "In particular, this applies to countries that are trying to teach everyone about human rights and democracy. The issue of refugees can be resolved if the reasons forcing people to leave their homes are eliminated,” Erdogan added.
He noted the importance of the successful implementation of the December 2018 Global Compact on Refugees, to which Türkiye has made an active contribution.
