EU ready to deprive Hungary of voting rights for blocking 50 billion euros in aid for Ukraine

EU ready to deprive Hungary of voting rights for blocking 50 billion euros in aid for Ukraine

If, at the EU summit in February, Hungary blocks the agreement on the allocation of 50 billion euros of aid to Ukraine, the EU can apply Article 7, depriving Budapest of the right to vote, reported from Politico.

It is noted that EU diplomats, after many years of a soft approach to Budapest, have made it clear that the removal of Hungary from the EU voting process is no longer something incredible if it endangers the security of Ukraine, a candidate country for accession to the European Union.

Five European officials and diplomats said that other EU countries are ready to oppose Hungary, which would be a historic step for leaders who rely on cohesion and unanimity.

"If Orban again blocks the agreement (on the budget and 50 billion euros for Ukraine) at the February summit, the use of Article 7 to deprive Hungary of the right to vote may become a real option," said one of the EU diplomats.
