EU to ask for accelerating military aid to Ukraine at G7 summit

The European Union (EU) will ask for expanding and accelerating military aid to Ukraine at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, said Ursula von der Leyen at the joint press conference with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, ahead of the Council of Europe, G7 and EU-Republic of Korea Summits.

"I also expect the leaders to rally behind two main principles: The first principle is that we will keep supporting Ukraine, for ‘as long as it takes'. The second principle is ‘nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine'.

‘As long as it takes' must basically translate into: stable financial support, of course also beyond 2023; an accelerated military support, focused on the ‘now' and ‘here'; ‘nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine' means very strong support for President Zelenskyy's Peace Formula,” von der Leyen said.

"Right now, Ukraine needs more military support. And fast. This will be crucial to its counter-offensive,” Charles Michel said.

"At the G7, we will reaffirm our support for President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula. Any credible peace plan must be anchored in the principles of the UN Charter. And we are extremely clear: only Ukraine has to decide when to consider potential negotiations, only Ukraine,” he stressed.

Michel added that they are negotiating an 11th package that will close loopholes and further prevent Russia from acquiring crucial supplies.
