Europe relies on Azerbaijani gas

"This is the only project that guarantees us a major new supply."

The conflict in the south-east of Ukraine forced the member states to accelerate the diversification of sources of natural energy resources and the process of creating a European Union energy.

News.Az reports citing TASS that the statement came from the deputy chairman of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič on Sunday.

"The EU is extremely tired to worry every summer about how things with the energy supplies for the coming winter will be",  he said, "Energy security issues are under control of higher political leaders. "

Vice-President of the EC considers Azerbaijan as an alternative gas supplier to the EU.

He added that the implementation of the "Southern Gas Corridor" project has already started.

The gas from the Caspian region will be supplied to Europe by this route.

"This is the only project that guarantees us a major new gas supplies from a new source. It is also about major construction projects, the cost of implementation is estimated at EUR 45 bn," Šefčovič  said.

Diplomat boradcasts the possibility of starting the supply of Azerbaijani gas to European consumers in 2019.
