Ex-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev says he's ill in the hospital

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is in the hospital, Russia's state-run RIA Novosti reported on Friday, citing an interview that Gorbachev granted a radio station.

The former leader told Russia News Service that "my condition in the last seven days was tolerable, but today I am in the hospital. I have a disease recurrence. I'm monitored, wires all over me."Gorbachev suffers from a severe form of diabetes and has often received treatment in German hospitals, RIA Novosti reported.Gorbachev served as president of the Soviet Union from 1985 until his resignation in 1991, during which time he embarked on a process of change and increased openness to the West that became known as "perestroika."He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for helping to bring the Cold War to an end.(CNN)Bakudaily.Az
