First European Games: Highlights of the day – June 22

The Baku 2015 Archery competition came to a close on June 22 and Spaniard Miguel Alvarino Garcia overcame a stiff breeze as well as Dutchman Sjef van den Berg to become the first European Games champion.

Though they finished outside of the medals in fifth position overall, host nation Azerbaijan did have some performances to celebrate in the men's Athletics competition, notably the winning triple jump from rising star Nazim Babayev. In the end, Slovakia prevailed by the narrowest of margins - just 0.5 points - as their long-running battle with Austria for the no.1 spot was decided in the final event, the 4x400 men's relay, in which one of the Austrian athletes dropped the baton, leaving his team to finish in 6th position.

German pair Monika Karsch and Christian Reitz, who had already won medals in individual events (gold in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol final for Reitz, and bronze in the women's 25m pistol for Karsch), triumphed in the final event of the Shooting competition at the Baku 2015 European Games, the mixed team 10m air pistol.

One of the many memorable moments of the day's Sambo competition came in the final match of the women's 60kg, as Yana Kostenko of Russia overcame Bulgaria's Kalina Stefanova.
