Stefan Petrovski has died after being struck by lightning while playing for his club Melaka United, in Malaysia.
The 18-year-old Australian lost consciousness after being hit as he left a training session last month.
He has now died in hospital.
Petrovski was rushed to hospital in the city of Malacca and put on a ventilator in intensive care.
He was reportedly suffering from a lack of oxygen supply to and swelling on the brain.
He has shown signs of recovery – but his condition deteriorated and he has died.
Khairi Anuar Ahmad, vice-president of Melaka United, said: "He was a dedicated goalkeeper and boasted that he wanted to be the best goalkeeper in the country.
"He was very jovial, a good boy, liked by his team-mates and always wanted to be better.”
A second player, Muhd Afiq Azuan, was also hit in the freak incident – but the 21-year-old regained consciousness and was able to be stabilised.Melaka United play in the second tier of Malaysian football.
Petrovski, of mixed Australian and Malaysian heritage, played for NSW Premier League club Sydney Olympic before moving to Malaysia upon obtaining his passport.
