Germany may offer airfields for training Ukrainian pilots on F-16

The chairperson of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (Free Democratic Party), believes that Germany may offer its airfields for training Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16 fighters, reported from TASS.

"We’ve never had F-16s, but we can provide airports in Germany as a hub or offer basic training for pilots who have only flown MiGs so far,” Strack-Zimmermann told Bild newspaper. The main training on the F-16, should be carried out by the countries that are armed with these fighters, she noted.

Commenting on the possible membership of Ukraine in NATO, the head of the Bundestag committee stressed that now the republic cannot join the alliance. "This is prohibited by the charter, since Ukraine is at war. The requirements for joining NATO are complex and varied. They must be met,” she stated.

However, she noted that "it would be wise for Ukraine to take part in the [alliance] summit in Vilnius, especially since how NATO will provide security guarantees to Ukraine after the end of the conflict will also be of great importance.”
