Hezbollah says Nusra Front attacks position near Syria border

Armed militants attacked a Hezbollah position on the outskirts of the town of Brital in Lebanon’s Bekaa valley near the border with Syria, Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported.

Several attackers were killed and injured in the “severeclashes,” the news service said, without saying where it got the information. A large number of gunmen from al-Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda-linked group, attacked Hezbollah’s position near Brital and were repulsed after suffering heavy losses, Al-Manar TV, the station of the Iranian-backed Shiite militia, said.

Hezbollah is fighting alongside Syrian government forces against mainly a Sunni-Muslim rebel force increasingly dominated by groups such as Islamic State and al-Nusra front. Militants attacked a Lebanese border town in August, capturing several soldiers, raising concerns that Syria’s three-year civil war was spilling into Lebanon.

Militants from al-Nusra Front and Islamic State attacked two Hezbollah bases, which were on the Syrian side of border near Brital and Nahleh, the Beirut-based Daily Star newspaper reported, citing security officials it didn’t identify. More than three Hezbollah fighters and 14 militants were killed in the assault, the Beirut-based newspaper reported.

Hezbollah captured five militants, the newspaper said.
