Hungary's CERN can help build data center in Azerbaijan

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) could be brought in to help Azerbaijan build a new data center with a planned investment of €30m to 120m as part of agreements signed with Hungary.

CERN officially opened its second data center with the Wigner Research Center in Budapest for its scientific research in particle physics in June last year.

It also operates a large data center on the Swiss French border used for analysing data collected from the Large Hadron Collider which resides on that same site.

According to Azernews, Hungary has agreed to help Azerbaijan with national development in the fields of communications and information technology, particularly in the areas of e-government, cyber security and data center construction.

The data center will be a regional facility built in cooperation with the EU and/or CERN, the report said.

This is just one data center project currently on the cards for Azerbaijan.

Local carrier Delta Telecom is continuing its build of what it calls a “national data center” in the Caucasus region.

The data center is currently drawing 10% of allocated power.

“The main goal of Data Center Delta Telecom is the development of national content and its placement in Azerbaijan and complete security of information,” Delta Telecom said.

According to reports, Google houses some of its servers inside Delta Telecom’s data center and it eventually aims to have 80 to 85% of international content requested by users in Azerbaijan to be drawn from there instead of the US and Germany.

Microsoft also said back in 2012 that it was working with the Azerbaijan Communications and IT Ministry on a cloud computing project in the country.

In June last year, the Europe Persia Express Gateway was made live connecting Oman and Frankfurt and passing through Azerbaijan, Poland and Ukraine, providing 3.2 Tbps connectivity which will be increased to 15 Tbps in 2016.
