Ibragimbekov steps down as leader of Azeri opposition bloc

Oscar-winningAzeri screenwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov has stepped down as chairman of theNational Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), an alliance of opposition partiesand groups.

In astatement on contact.az website, Ibragimbekov said he had live abroad becauseof his job as a screenwriter and therefore could not allocate much time to theopposition alliance. He urged members of the NCDF elect Camil Hasanli as theirnew chairman.

Ibragimbekovfounded NCDF in May to challenge President Ilham Aliyev in the Oct. 9 election.

Aliyev wonthe election with almost 85 percent of the vote, according to official results.

The bloc’s candidate,Camil Hasanli, got only 5.5 percent.

TheOrganization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said the electionfell short of international standards.
