Iran, Azerbaijan discuss border security

The commanders of Azerbaijan's and Iran's border troops, Elcin Quliyev and Qasem Reza'i, have discussed border security between the two countries in a meeting held in Baku on 9 March.

The sides discussed operations of border checkpoints, interaction in fighting illegal activities in the Caspian Sea, and the fight against illegal migration, smuggling, drugs and arms trafficking, Azerbaijan's Border Service reported.

The sides expressed readiness to share information and experience regarding these issues. They also discussed expansion of cooperation regarding the North-South international transport corridor [through which freight will be moved between India, Russia, Iran, Europe and the Central Asia] and the construction of Astara-Astara railway road [connecting Azerbaijan and Iran].

As part of the Iranian delegation's visit, Qasem Reza'i will visit units of the border troops and a number of military facilities, the report reads.

There have been no reports about the visit [to Baku] of the head of the Border Service of the Russian Federal Security Service, Vladimir Kulishov.

It was reported earlier that the commanders of border troops of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia will hold a trilateral meeting in Baku.
