Iranian, Azeri officials attend inaugural ceremony of border terminal

Iranian and Azeri officials have participated in the inaugural ceremony of the first part of a border terminal currently under construction in Poldasht County in north-western West Azarbayjan Province, the provincial TV channel reported on 4 May.

According to the report, the deputy minister of urban development and roads and the head of Iran's Road Maintenance and Transportation Organisation, Keshavarzian, attended the ceremony, as did senior officials from Iran's West Azarbayjan Province and a group of officials from Azerbaijan's Naxcivan Autonomous Republic.

"We intend to lift the visa regime for Iranian citizens in three months and take another step in the expansion of relations," Tehran's ambassador in Baku, Mohsen Paka'in, said, adding that Iran and Azerbaijan intend to develop closer ties in the fields of transportation, tourism and agriculture.

Later on Governor-General Sa'adat talked of common issues faced by the two nations, and said that "relations between the two countries have improved due to the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the work of the ambassadors," the TV channel reported. The provincial official also said that he hoped that the new border terminal will have an important role in improving the economic situation of people living on both sides of the border.

The video also showed Naxcivan Autonomous Republic Speaker of Parliament, Vasif Talibov making remarks in Azeri.

The report also said: "It is expected that the number of transit trucks will increase by 2.5 times," adding that 65 per cent of the second part of the terminal had been constructed.
