Iranian suspect in Israeli embassy plot released

An Iranian national who was detained in Azerbaijan on charges of “suspicious behavior” near the Israeli embassy has been released and returned home.

After one month in detention, Hassan Faraji returned to Iran on Sunday.

Faraji was released on Friday but was held by Azeri officials for two days due to document problems.

During a meeting with the Iranian ambassador to Baku before his departure, Faraji denied the allegations against himself and said even the news that he was arrested near the Israeli mission was a sheer lie.

He underlined that he was visiting Baku for doing business. “My innocence was proved to Azeri officials during the interrogation.”

Faraji, 31, is the latest in a number of Iranians to be accused of criminal plots in recent years in Azerbaijan.

On October 11, the Baku Court on Grave Crimes sentenced another Iranian national, Bahram Feyzi, to 15 years in prison on charges of espionage.
