Irish historian: Armenia protracting negotiations, meanwhile people dying on both sides

Armenia’s obstructionist position on peace negotiations, the delay in signing an agreement with Azerbaijan leads to the fact that people continue to die, on both sides, both Azerbaijanis and the Armenians themselves, Irish historian and political scientist Patrick Walsh said.

He noted that the lack of results of a peaceful settlement means that the state of war still persists between the two countries - in one form or another.

Walsh added that people continue to die, and there is no point in this.

"The Armenian position is to drag out the negotiations as long as possible, avoiding the inevitable - the signing of a peace agreement. Partly this is the unwillingness to come to terms with the reality of defeat in the Second Karabakh War in 2020 and recognize Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan,” he said.

According to the expert, this behavior of Armenia is also connected with the hope that other countries, such as Russia, Iran, the US or the EU, will help them somehow resolve the situation.

"Yerevan hopes that the constantly changing geopolitical situation in the world will somehow lead to the emergence of an ally who will prevent the inevitable. But this is really a vain hope, and it is one of the reasons for such obstructionist behavior,” concluded Patrick Walsh.
