Is There "Terror" Threat from AIDS Carriers in Baku?

The last few days social networks spread news about the existence of a threat of infection with AIDS in the public areas of Baku. According to this information, distributors and carriers of HIV infection "organized" and started the action " of contracting the virus to healthy people." To do this, they allegedly left drops of their blood in public places, on benches, ATMs, cinemas, etc., and thus contribute to the contamination of healthy people. The purpose of this action is revenge against the people who do not suffer from this disease.

In order to clarify the truth of the information the ANN.Az reporter appealed to the Director of the National Centre for the Fight against AIDS Esmira Almamedova.

According to Almamedova, any risk of infection of healthy people with AIDS in public places does not exist. " The information spread in social networks is not true. The AIDS virus is very vulnerable and quickly dies. People can become infected with the virus through sexual contact or during the long use of narcotic substances. We should explain to the population about the importance of passing free screening for the AIDS virus in the blood. Anonymity of the survey is given full guarantee," said the Director of the Center.

According to the National AIDS Center, the AIDS virus was first discovered in Azerbaijan in 1987. Since then the Center has registered 4,171 people with the virus. 4,027 of them are Azerbaijanis and 144 are foreigners. 2,326 people or 59 % of the patients are drug addicts.
