Israel committed to ceasefire in Lebanon, keeping close eye on Syria — Netanyahu

Israel is committed to the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon and is closely following the development in neighboring Syria, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, reported from TASS.

"We are closely monitoring what is happening in Syria and are strictly committed to the ceasefire in Lebanon," he said while visiting the Tel Hashomer military base near Tel Aviv.

"Any violation will immediately meet a strong response from the IDF," he warned.

The agreement on the first ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon since hostilities flared up in October 2023 took effect on the morning of November 27. US President Joe Biden announced that the agreements between the Jewish state and Hezbollah provided for the re-establishment of the Lebanese army and state security forces’ control of the country’s territory within 60 days. After that, the Israeli army will be gradually pulled out of Lebanon.

The Syrian army command reported on November 28 that units of the Jabhat al-Nusra extremist group (outlawed in Russia) had staged a large-scale attack on Syria’s northern governorates the day prior. The terrorists attempted to seize a number of neighborhoods and military facilities and attacked the positions of government forces. On November 30, the Syrian army said that it had to regroup when repelling the attack by terrorists on Aleppo to save the lives of civilians and its troops and is getting prepared for a counterattack.

Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar Assad said in a conversation with President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that the country is capable of defeating terrorists with the help of allies and friends.
