Kazakhstan eyes spending over $32M on referendum on nuke plant construction

Kazakhstan's Central Election Commission (CEC) plans to spend 15.5 billion tenge ($32.1 million) to hold a referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant, reported from Kazakh media. 

The CEC is developing and submitting to the government for consideration a rough (preliminary) cost estimate. 

"The total amount of expenses according to our estimate is 15.5 billion tenge. It includes the organization and holding of the national referendum at 78 foreign polling stations located in 63 countries," said CEC member Sabila Mustafina. 

Some 71% of the total amount is salaries for commission members at all levels. The commission also provided explanations regarding monitoring the referendum on the nuclear power plant.

There is a register of accredited public organizations; they can send their representatives to observe the national referendum," said CEC representative Anastasia Shchegortsova.

On September 2, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on holding a referendum on the issue of building a nuclear power plant, which will take place on October 6, 2024.
