People with them often loathe them and those without them covet them.
And now one photographer is celebrating all things freckled with a striking new art project.
Photographer Brock Elbank, from London, has launched a photoseries named #Freckles, which aims to showcase the skin feature in all their glory.
Since launching the project he has snapped 90 subjects in his studio - and now he's on the hunt for more freckled models to star in his series.
The snapper is curating a collection to display next year through Michael Reid Sydney/Berlin.
Discussing his efforts with Buzzfeed, Brock said: ‘What I find interesting about individual characters that I have been fortunate enough to photograph is that many have struggled with their freckles since their infancy and either hated them, or grown to live with them or even like them in adulthood.’
‘Many of the subjects shot so far are such incredible-looking humans… amazing-looking individuals from all walks of life.'
The idea came to fruition when Brock, who was living in Sydney at the time, was inspired by his friend's freckled son.
After photographing him, he decided to launch his project and now shares the images with his 42,000 Instagram followers.
He also recently photographed Graham Norton for his #Beard series, which he will exhibit in Europe next Spring.
The series, which was initially established as a skin cancer awareness campaign, became a three-week exhibition at Somerset House last year thanks to its popularity.
The photographer and his wife decamped to a Warwickshire village for two years after spending a decade as Sydney dwellers.
Speaking to The Guardian, he explained that he is relishing London's ethnic diversity, saying: 'Whatever I do in the next five or 10 years, I want it to have diversity - Japanese, African, African-Caribbean or Peruvian.
'I’m looking for an Irish-Peruvian-Caribbean!'
If you’re a freckled person interested in taking part, simply send a very clear passport-style photo to Brock at [email protected]. More info can be found on Brock's Instagram page.
