According to the UN, about 30 million metric tons of grain and other grains were exported from Ukraine under the grain deal, including almost 600,000 metric tons of grain on World Food Program ships for aid operations in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Yemen.
The Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was signed on July 22, 2022 by representatives of Türkiye, Russia, Ukraine and the UN, involves the export of Ukrainian grain, food and fertilizer from three Ukrainian ports. The last time Ukraine, Türkiye, the UN and Russia extended the grain agreement in March 2023. Ukraine announced that the agreement had been extended for 120 days. At the same time, Russia claims that it has agreed to a 60-day extension, that is, until May 18.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu last week expressed hope that the deal could be extended for at least another two months. Today, Turkish media reported that the issue of extending the grain deal will be discussed by telephone between the leaders of Türkiye and Russia, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin.
