Azerbaijani Parliament’s decision to restore relations with the European Parliament is a positive step forward, Inara Murniece, chairperson of the Latvian Saeima (parliament) told reporters in Baku Oct. 3.
Murniece noted that her visit to Baku is aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations between Latvia and Azerbaijan.
Latvia, as an EU member, always pays attention to the issue of Eastern Partnership, she said, recalling that Latvia has presiding over the Council of the European Union since 2015.
The parliament chairperson noted that at the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, they discussed the relations between the two peoples, as well as the development of ties in the economic, educational and social fields.
"As Latvia is a transit country, we can develop the relations with Azerbaijan in the field of maritime and air transport,” she added.
The Latvian parliamentary delegation headed by Inara Murniece visited the grave of Heydar Aliyev in the Alley of Honor in Baku Oct. 3. The guests also visited the Alley of Martyrs in Baku to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for Azerbaijan’s independence.
