Lavrov casts doubt on Macron’s statements regarding Durov’s arrest

Lavrov casts doubt on Macron’s statements regarding Durov’s arrest

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed doubts about French President Emmanuel Macron’s claim that the arrest of Pavel Durov, co-founder of Telegram, was not politically motivated.

In an interview with RBK, Lavrov stated, "They are trying to convince everyone that there is no politics here. Macron also openly confirmed this. It is very hard to believe, and the West has long been capturing popular and key information resources.”

Lavrov pointed out that although France, like other OSCE countries, signed the Paris Charter for a New Europe in 1990, which supports universal values, it has since crossed the line. The Russian side continues to seek detailed information about Durov’s detention in Paris from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, the French side has not yet responded to Russia’s offer of assistance.

"They argue that since Pavel Durov has French citizenship and is detained in France, French law applies. In this case, his French citizenship prevails,” Lavrov noted.
