Lavrov: US advising Yerevan to expel Russian base, promising to ‘ensure security’

The US is ‘advising’ Armenia to abandon the deployment of the Russian base and border guards, promising to ‘ensure security’ in return, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Tsargrad TV channel.

"I know that the US and its allies tell Armenia to drive the Russians out of its territory, and the border guards too, remove the military base, the Americans will help ensure security. Definitely a provocation. This is not diplomacy... This is direct bribery,” he said.

He noted that the US often abandons its allies.

"We see how the West behaves with those on whom it made some kind of bet in the past. They abandoned Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who at the beginning of the Arab Spring resigned with dignity, did not run away... The United States abandoned the Afghan leadership on which they relied during the twenty-year occupation of this country,” Lavrov reminded.

The 102nd Russian military base is deployed on the territory of Armenia.
