Leonore Gewessler: 'We have gathered in Baku at critical moment for humanity'

The global community gathered at the COP29 conference in Baku at a critically important moment for humanity to make important decisions for the planet's future, Austria's Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, Leonore Gewessler, said at a high-level meeting during COP29.

The minister noted that 2024 has already become the hottest year in human history.

"There is practically no place on this planet that is not affected by the devastating consequences of the climate crisis. From the most vulnerable island states, whose voices we have just heard, to my home country, Austria, in the center of Europe. People are dying, homes are being destroyed. The future is at risk," she said.

According to her, the climate fight requires urgent and inclusive actions.

"In Dubai, we agreed on decisive actions to triple renewable energy sources and move away from fossil fuels. This year we must deliver on what was promised. Great commitments become historic only when they are fulfilled," the minister added.

Gewessler emphasized that the new collective quantitative goal for climate financing is a central part of the package of issues that must be resolved at COP29 in Baku.

The goal of climate financing is to provide support to developing countries in transformation and fighting the devastating consequences of climate change, she said.
