The Barcelona wizard is accused of "setting up a fraud network” after he was linked in the Panama Papers – a huge cache of 11million documents allegedly revealing how the rich and famous launder money and evade tax.
Messi, who captains the Argentina national side, and his family are reportedly planning to sue El Confidencial for defamation after being caused of using company Mega Star Enterprises to avoid paying tax on image rights deals, according to the Mirror.
Documents are alleged to show signatures of Messi and his father Jorge in obtaining the dormant firm via a buffer company based in Uruguay.
The legal action has been confirmed by the Madrid-based daily.
The leaked documents from secretive law firm Mossack Fonseca also reportedly include footie stars from Brazil, Uruguay, the UK, Turkey, Serbia and the Netherlands.
Former Uefa president Michel Platini also appears in the list, it has been reported.
Platini was banned from football for six years after he was embroiled in the 2015 Fifa scandal.
