Media: Armenians deepening relations with West, turning away from Russia

The Armenian society is increasingly turning away from Russia towards the EU, the US and Iran, Armenian journalist Robert Ananyan wrote on his Twitter page.

"Russian propaganda and leading political forces, which have strong positions in Armenia, have been deceiving Armenians for decades that Russia is Armenia's unconditional and only ally. They conducted a black campaign against the USA, France, NATO, EU. With the permission of the former authorities, false anti-Western stereotypes were promoted in Armenia,” he tweeted.

"However, the 44-day war of 2020 shattered the myth of the Russian "strongest bear" in Armenia. The International Republican Institute published the results of a survey conducted among Armenian citizens, which proves that the Armenian citizens trust Western countries more than Russia.”

"Thus, 63% of Armenians who participated in the survey of the International Republican Institute evaluate the current situation of relations between Armenia and France as "very good", 33% as "somewhat good". The US is in the third place after Iran with a positive result. 21% of Armenians evaluate Armenia-US relations as "very good" and 67% as "somewhat good".

The European Union has the fourth positive indicator in Armenia. 18% of Armenians assess the state of Armenia-EU relations as "very good", 68% as "somewhat good". Moreover, the rate of those who rate the relations with France, the USA, and the EU as "very bad" and "somewhat bad" does not exceed 10%.

Only 10% of Armenians assessed the current state of relations with Russia as "very good", and 40% as "somewhat good". This is a catastrophically low number for Russian Federation, which previously had an indisputable image of a "savior" in Armenia. 15% rated the current state of relations between Russia and Armenia as "very bad", and 34% rated it as "somewhat bad". In other words, about 50% of Armenians have a negative assessment of the current state of Armenian-Russian relations. As you remember, in the case of no western country, the negative index did not exceed 10%,” the journalist wrote.

"Armenians consider France to be the absolute leader as an important political partner state. 75% of Armenian citizens consider France to be Armenia's most important political partner. Iran is in second place with 67%, due to the fact that Tehran has declared the inviolability of Armenia's borders as a "red line". Iran, together with the West, prevented a large-scale attack by Azerbaijan on Armenia. The USA is in third place, with 52% of Armenians considering it an important political partner,” he tweeted.

"The negative role of Russia in Armenian society is more emphasized. It is necessary to observe the processes in dynamics. Russia definitely loses to the West in Armenia.

Gradually, Russian defeat will become more obvious. These indicators provide a good basis for the Armenian authorities to leave Russia and start deeper cooperation with the USA, France, EU, and NATO.”
