On August 27, the Senate of the State of California adopted a resolution, recognizing Azerbaijan’s separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state. It also called on the US Congress and President Barack Obama to recognize and support Nagorno-Karabakh.
Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los Angeles has issued a statement, describing the resolution as a vivid example of political corruption.
Asim Mollazade, chairman of the Democratic Reforms Party and a member of the Milli Maclis (Azerbaijan’s parliament), said the resolution is an illegal and insignificant document adopted “exclusively on orders” from American Armenians, mainly those living in the State of California.
In an interview with ANN news portal, Mollazade said: “The resolution of the Californian Senate has no legal significance as it fully contradicts international law. It is a political move that goes against the policies of the federal government and the US president.”
Mollazade said more than a million Armenians reside in California on a permanent basis. California has become a “second Armenian outpost” after the Republic of Armenia itself, which Russia describes as one of its military outposts. The second outpost is acting against US political interests exactly the same way the first one is destroying Russia from within, Mollazade said.
The US federal government does not recognize the self-proclaimed “republic” of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is an occupied region of Azerbaijan, Mollazade said.
The main goal of Californian Armenians was to irritate Azerbaijan, to spoil US-Azerbaijani relations and help create anti-American sentiment in our country. On the other hand, American Armenians are interested in sowing discord between members of the Commonwealth of Independent States, to harm Russia and provoke conflict between Russia and the US against a backdrop of US economic sanctions against Russia, Mollazade said.
The MP drew attention to the timing of the Californian Senate resolution. It came amid the escalation of tensions between Ukraine and Russia.
Mollazade said the war in Ukraine is a continuation of the developments in Nagorno-Karabakh. It is yet another example of aggressive ethnic separatism, which is now happening in Ukrainian soil.
“The Karabakh conflict was provoked to destroy Azerbaijan. The developments in Ukraine are designed to break up the country,” Mollazade said.
