Asim Mollazade, leader of the Democratic Reforms Party of Azerbaijan, made a number of proposals on the draft law on science during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on science and education on Dec. 25.
Mollazade said it is important to note in the draft law that the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (NASA) is the regulator of state policy on science. "This needs to be said openly in the draft,” he said.
During the early years of Azerbaijan’s independence, a number of education institutions were turned into universities although there was only one university – Baku State University - in the true sense of the word, Mollazade said. He suggested that the other universities should merge if they really want to be universities.
The state policy on science should take note of national specifics, Mollazade said. He proposed that the beautiful and world-class Museum of Carpets recently built in Baku should be turned into a carpet research center. "It is necessary to relate the work of these centers with the Academy of Sciences. Unfortunately, these provisions are not clearly identified in the bill,” Mollazade said.
