Moscow says West seeks to destabilize situation in South Caucasus

Moscow says West seeks to destabilize situation in South Caucasus

Western countries pursue not the peacekeeping intentions in their striving to penetrate into the South Caucasus region, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, answering a question from Baku TV.

According to her, the West seeks to influence the region to extract its own economic benefit and destabilize it.

"Such trends certainly upset the balance of power in the region and harm the peaceful settlement that should have been established on the basis of relevant agreements," she said.

Zakharova expressed hope that the agreements will open up opportunities for economic growth in the region and the development of logistics routes.

In her opinion, Western influence could hinder such prospects

"Unfortunately, wherever the West 'crept' into, it all ended disastrously, with new conflicts provoked, old conflicts activated, people pitted against each other. There are no other examples in recent decades," she concluded.
