Manchester United has granted the England captain a testimonial to mark his 12 years with the club.

And he plans to invite the best players in the globe to take part in a star-studded match on August 3, 2016.

They include Gareth Bale, 26, Cristiano Ronaldo, 30 and Lionel Messi, 28.

Rooney, 30, may also try to convince David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Gary Neville, all 40, to come out of retirement.

He has pledged that every penny raised at the match will go to children’s charities.

They include the NSPCC, Claire House Hospice and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, which cared for wife Coleen’s sister Rosie in her battle with brain disorder Rett Syndrome.

The one-off match is certain to be a sell-out and looks set to raise more than £2m.

Rooney said last night: "I would like to thank everyone involved in making this testimonial become a reality.

"I hope the fans will come out in force and help raise as much money as possible for these amazing charities, all of which are very close to my heart.”

John Shiels, of the Manchester United Foundation, said: "Wayne has always done whatever he can to give encouragement and support to those facing hardship, deprivation and lack of opportunity in and around Manchester.”
