Need a new runaround?

It could be overkill for popping to the shops, and with a single seat is unlikely to be seen on the school run.

However, one  American car enthusiast hopes this $35,000 rocket powered car will soon find a new owner - and is selling it on eBay.

The jet car measures 16 feet long, and is based on an engine design developed by the Germans during World War II to power the infamous V1 'flying bomb'.

Called a pulse jet, it powered the V-1 'buzz bomb,' a predecessor to the modern cruise missile.

The car took Bob Maddox a year to build.

'You can set this car in a line of half million dollar cars and everyone will be looking at the wild jet car!' he says in the eBay listing.

'It can be taken out and fired up for exhibitions from car shows to air shows.

'With six feet of fire out the tail pipe and as loud as a top fuel dragster, it really has the WOW factor.'

The car consists of a long pipe in which air and gasoline are mixed and ignited by a seven million volt spark box.

The body is made from the auxiliary fuel tank of a P-38 Lightning.

They combust in 'pulses' about 45 times a second, with air valves making sure the explosion and accompanying six-foot flame are pointed in the right direction.

The car is 16 feet long, with the main pipe measuring 11 feet.

It burns two to six gallons of fuel a minute and rides on Goodyear tires.

The 'cockpit' is rather tight, so no one over 5'8″ or about 160 pounds would fit, Maddox told Wired..

However, he admits that while it has been fired up, it hasn't been driven, although he estimates it could hit 150 to 170 mph.
