New bridge opened on Azeri-Iranian border

A new bridge connecting Azerbaijan’s Naxcivan region with Iran over the river Araz was opened today, the Iranian embassy in Baku said.

The bridge at the Culfa (Julfa) customs checkpoint will be open for vehicles weighting over 30 tons.

Iran had earlier banned heavier vehicles from using the older bridge, restricting cargo transportation between Naxcivan and the rest of Azerbaijan.

The exclave of Naxcivan has no land border with Azerbaijan proper and is surrounded by Iran and Armenia.

The embassy said the new bridge will help boost trade between the two countries.
