A newborn baby girl has been discovered wedged inside a sewer pipe at a Chinese university after her student mother gave birth and then fled, leaving the child behind.

Police believe that the young woman hoped to hide the pregnancy by leaving her helpless daughter to fall down the toilet at her student dormitory in the city of Linyi, Shandong Province.

The child's life was saved only because the pipe beneath the toilet is just seven inches wide, which meant she became stuck - alerting other students to her presence by crying.

Students using the dormitory toilets heard the sound of a baby crying and raised the alarm.

Firemen who rushed to the scene were amazed to find the child wedged inside the pipe and, as she was still crying, knew there was still time to save her life.

'It was impossible to get the baby out from above. She had fallen into the toilet and gone down the pipes were she had got stuck between the third and fourth floors,' said local fire department spokesman Tao Fang.

'We used an angle grinder to break open the pipeline on the third floor and we could then push the child up to colleagues on the fourth floor where she was handed to medics who were waiting to take her to hospital,' he added.

Police managed to track down the child's mother who is a student living in the dormitory building and who required urgent hospital treatment upon discovery.

Officers say they are still waiting to question her before deciding what she might be charged with.

The shocking story has caused heated debate on Chinese social media sites.

Many have lamented an apparent lack of decent values among the country's youth - not to mention shock at the way the mother had simply abandoned her baby in the toilet.

One user on China's popular social media site Weibo, WangLo34, said: 'I find the image of a young woman giving birth in the toilet, cleaning herself up and going back to her room to carry on studying a particularly worrying one and a sign of the sort of throwaway society that we live in now days.'
