Norwegian PM proposes to accept Ukraine into NATO with special wording

NATO may officially invite Ukraine to the alliance, but the document should state that this will happen ‘when the time comes’, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said upon his arrival at the NATO summit, reported from TASS.

The invitation should be formulated in such a way that when the time comes and the members agree, Ukraine can join, he noted, adding that it will be emphasized that Ukraine has a future in NATO.

Store called the summit in Vilnius ‘historic’, as on July 10 it became known about Turkiye's consent to the admission of Sweden to NATO.

For the first time in history, the entire northern region will be in NATO. This is a profound positive change in how the defense will be planned, the Norwegian politician explained.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said earlier that Ukraine would not receive an invitation to join NATO at the Vilnius summit, but would be sent a strong signal that the doors of the alliance remain open.

He noted that NATO will adopt a multi-year program of military assistance to Ukraine, which should be implemented regardless of the course of the conflict with Russia.
