Oscar Pistorius leaves prison in Pretoria
21.10.2015 22:00
South African paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison in Pretoria.

Pistorius will serve the remainder of his sentence under correctional supervision at his uncle’s house.

The 28-year-old shot his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead in 2013.

Anneliese Burgess is a spokesperson for the Pistorius family:"It’s very important for the family to emphasise that Oscar’s sentence hasn’t been shortened or reduced. He’s simply entering the next phase of his sentence now, he will serve this under the strict conditions that govern correctional supervision.”

The athlete was released a day early under the cover of darkness to avoid the media spotlight.

The family of Reeva Steenkamp believe Pistorius is "getting off lightly.”

On the streets reaction is mixed: "It’s a sad day for justice, for the justice system in South Africa and it’s setting a bad precedent for people,” said one Pretoria resident.

Another believes the decision is just: "Whatever he has done he will learn from that mistake. So, I think he deserves a second chance.”

On Valentine’s Day 2013, Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius.

The athlete said he thought she was an intruder hiding in the bathroom.

He was found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to five years imprisonment.
