The president of Mauritania is believed to have called the match to a halt, leaving the rest of the crowd infuriated.
The referee then signalled for a shootout in the game between FC Tevragh-Zeina and ACS Ksar.
But the Mauritanian federation's president, Ahmed Ould Abderrahmane, denied the top official oordered the abrupt ending.
He said: "I deny in the strongest terms the intervention of the President of the Republic.
"The decision was made due to organisational issues in accordance with the presidents and the coaches of the two teams."
