Pakistan's ex-PM Imran Khan and wife arrested in Toshakhana scandal

Pakistani court has ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, until July 22. The couple faces new charges related to alleged abuse of power in acquiring gifts from the state treasury, known as Toshakhana, according to the information which cites Geo.

The accountability court has instructed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to interrogate the suspects in Adiala Jail, with the couple scheduled to appear before the court on July 22.

Khan's legal team has vehemently protested the arrest, declaring it unlawful. They have already filed a bail application with the Supreme Court, highlighting the contentious nature of the case. This arrest comes less than a day after an Islamabad court granted an appeal by Khan and his wife, overturning a verdict in an illegal marriage case - the last legal hurdle keeping the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party founder in prison.

Imran Khan led Pakistan's government from 2018 to 2022. His tenure culminated in a no-confidence vote that removed him from office on April 10, 2022. In August 2023, he was arrested on fraud charges related to the sale of valuables stored in the Toshakhana.
