"The modernization of the barrier itself will most likely cost about 1.5 billion zlotys (about $375 million), and this is exactly how much needs to be allocated for this barrier to actually work,” Tomczyk noted. He added that a team of Polish engineers and specialists from the Silesian University of Technology are working on the project.
According to Tomczyk, after modernization, the barrier "will become impassable,” while in its original form, it was only a temporary solution.
In February, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the authorities’ decision to begin work on modernizing the fence built in 2022 on the border with Belarus. It is a wall of steel blocks 5.5 m high and 186 km long to protect against illegal migrants. The construction cost was $278 million.
