Azeri president’s aide holds key meetings in Washington

Hikmet Hajiyev, foreign policy aide to Azerbaijan’s president, met US House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Brian Mast and Senator Steve Daines during his visit to Washington, Azerbaijan’s embassy said on Tuesday.
The talks highlighted the strategic significance of the Aug. 8 Washington summit between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and US President Donald Trump, describing it as a positive step for bilateral ties and regional peace.
Hajiyev underlined the importance of repealing Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act and invited the lawmakers to visit Azerbaijan.
At the Aug. 8 summit in Washington, Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint declaration mediated by Trump and initialled a peace treaty.
Aliyev and Trump also signed a memorandum on creating a Strategic Working Group to draft a partnership charter. Trump additionally signed an order suspending enforcement of Section 907, which restricts US aid to Azerbaijan.
