Protesting farmers flock to Brussels before EU summit

European farmers are heading to the Belgian capital, where a meeting of EU heads of state will begin on Thursday. About 1,000 tractors are already on the city roads, reported from Interfax.

According to trade unions, representatives of the agricultural sector not only from Belgium, but also from France, Italy, Spain and Portugal are taking part in the protest.

More tractor drivers are expected to arrive in Brussels throughout the day. They intend to gather on Luxembourg Square and nearby streets.

Mass protests by farmers began a week ago in France. Participants spoke out against tax increases and price increases, including for fuel for agricultural machinery, and called for the lifting of restrictions related to environmental standards introduced in France and the EU.

Later, the French were joined by agricultural workers from other European countries, who are also dissatisfied, in particular with increased production costs and the import of cheap agricultural products.
