Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit the Azerbaijani capital on June 12 to attend the opening of the European Games, the Kremlin said.
Putin will meet Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and possibly Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the next day, Yuri Ushakov, a foreign policy aide at the Russian leader’s office, told reporters on June 8.
Baku 2015, the first ever European Games, will take place from June 12 to June 28.
There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. Almost 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.
Baku was awarded the Games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
