Raisi: US must decide on the future of the nuclear deal
20.09.2023 09:30
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has called on the US authorities to decide on the future fate of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), designed to resolve the conflict over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, reported from TASS.

He was speaking at the general political debates within the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

The US must demonstrate commitment to its obligations and finally choose the appropriate path - either it is the restoration of the JCPOA or not, Raisi said.

The Iranian president called the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal a blatant crime and a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which enshrines the terms of the JCPOA. Raisi stressed that there is no place for nuclear weapons in Iran’s military doctrine, therefore the Islamic Republic should not be subject to sanctions for developing its own civil nuclear energy development program.

In 2015, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany signed a JCPOA with the Islamic Republic aimed at overcoming the crisis surrounding the Iranian nuclear program. The previous US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 to withdraw from this agreement. Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled his readiness to return Washington to the nuclear deal.
