Meet the $16000 pedal car

Meet the $16000 pedal car

As the Land Rover Defender trundles towards the end of its epic 68-year production run, you can now own one for a mere £10,000 (about $15,500). There’s just one problem: your shiny new Defender will be a single-seater powered not by a diesel engine, but by your feet, and only if you happen to be no bigger than a seven-year-old.

Still, there’s no denying this scaled down pedal car — the work of Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division, no less — is an object of extreme desire. Wherever possible it stays faithful to the full-size Defender – note skinny but authentically knobbly tyres, mud flaps, faux fuel-filler cap, step-up running bars and sparkly Loire Blue colour — the same paint offered on its bigger brother.

The 1bcp (brake child power) running gear consists of a set of pedals that provide forward and reverse propulsion, along with working brakes, a parking brake and tiny springs at each corner.

Oddly, the interior is plusher than any full-size Defender we’ve ever driven, with real leather-trimmed doors, seat, steering wheel and dash. There’s even a working horn for scaring the dog, and a load bay for carting around a seven-year-old’s essentials. Don’t show this to the kids, or Christmas could get pricey.
