Pepsi confirms it IS launching a mobile phone

Rumours have been bubbling away that Pepsi is set to launch a smartphone – and now the fizzy drinks firm has confirmed they are true.

Leaked image and details of a budget Android handset called the Pepsi P1 emerged earlier this week and PepsiCo told MailOnline a 'line of mobile phones and accessories' will launch in China in just a few months.

One handset, the P1, is predicted to boast features including a 5.5-inch screen, fingerprint scanner and 13-megapixel camera.

While Pepsi has confirmed the existence of a handset, it has not revealed any details.

A PepsiCo spokesman said: ‘We are pleased to share that Pepsi is working with a licensing partner to bring a line of mobile phones and accessories to market in China in the next few months.

‘Available in China only, this effort is similar to recent globally licensed Pepsi products which include apparel and accessories.

Pepsi has always moved at the speed of culture, and today technology is a key cultural pillar at the heart of consumer interaction.

‘Pepsi has no plans to get into the mobile phone manufacturing business, but we are committed to engaging with consumers in innovative ways to grow our brand.’

According to a report from Mobipicker, the P1 will run Android 5.1 Lollipop and have a 5.5-inch, 1080p screen.

Inside, there is said to be a 1.7GHz processor, 2GB of Ram, 16GB of internal storage and a 3,000 milliamp-hour battery.

The handset is also said to boast a 13-megapixel camera and 5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies.

A leaked image suggests there may be a fingerprint sensor on the rear of the device and possibly physical buttons beneath the screen.

Leaked specs suggest it is 0.3-inches (0.8cm) thick and have a metal shell.

Pepsi will unveil its first handset in Beijing on October 20, Chinese news sites Sina and Weibo reported, and it’s expected to go on sale within a few months for around 1,299CNY ($206 or £134).
