Georgia bans transit of Armenian dairy product through its territory
Georgia has banned the transit of Armenian-made Matsun dairy products (yogurt) to Russia through its territory, reported from Armenpress.
According to the information, the decision was linked to the fact that Georgia registered the name 'Matsoni' as its geographical indication. Armenian producers had to export matsun to Russia via Georgia under the name "Armenian mountain yogurt."
According to the Armenian Ministry of Economy, although the country filed a protest against the registration of the name 'Matsoni' in 2011 with the relevant authorities of the European Union and Georgia, it was not taken into account. It was noted that the Armenian government is taking steps with its Georgian counterparts to clarify the use of geographical indications.
Armenian dairy producers, in turn, said that Georgia has long registered the name 'Matsoni' as a geographical indication, and there had been no requirements, no bans, and no obstacles until recently.
Matsoni is the name of a Georgian yogurt product. Georgia registered the name as its geographical indicator in 2012, and the EU registered it as a Georgian indicator in 2014.
