Head of analytical center in Moldova: Azerbaijan’s proposal for direct talks with Armenia is welcomed

Azerbaijan's proposal for direct, unmediated peace talks with Armenia is welcomed, Ian Lisnevski, head of Moldova's Intellect Group analytical center for Eastern Europe informs.
He noted that one of the reasons why relations between the two countries remain complicated is the tension in the geopolitical situation caused by international powers.
"Azerbaijan's desire to hold direct peace talks with Armenia is welcomed. This can lead to constructive dialogue without interference from other countries,” Lisnevski said.
Explaining his opinion, he said that the mediating countries may have their own interests in this matter, and these interests are not voiced openly.
"We see that the activities of international actors have not yielded positive results in recent days. Before 2022, it was believed that superpowers could mediate and provide assistance in peace negotiations. It included humanitarian aid and diplomatic assistance. But now their influence in this matter is decreasing. Because superpowers have interests, they use these conflict zones for their own interests,” Lisnevski stressed.
According to the expert, after the escalation of military operations in Ukraine, more than 40 conflict zones in the world are at risk: "The situation in those conflict zones can escalate at any time. Israel is an example of this. In addition, the situation around Transnistria is also tense. The population is under pressure. In order not to undermine the stability here, the parties should negotiate. They should carry out these negotiations without the participation of superpowers.”
He noted that the positive aspect of the participation of major powers in such negotiations is that they can provide guarantees and assistance.
"We must understand that an unstable situation poses serious threats. People in all countries have been living in a tense situation for the past 5 years. During this period, the coronavirus pandemic spread, wars started, etc. The state of stress has a negative impact on the societies of different countries. It includes Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and all the countries where there is tension. Wars can start at any time. But it is very difficult to predict where they will start,” said Ian Lisnevski.
