26.08.2014 18:00

The U.S. Army rocket carrying a hypersonic weapon explodes just seconds after it took off from the a launch complex in Kodiak, Alaska on Monday.

The Defense Department said the incident was due to “flight anomaly” and officials are looking into the cause of the anomaly.

Reports said the rocket carrying the prototype weapon exploded seconds after it was launched, forcing operators to press the self-destruct button to ensure public safety.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The design was under the Conventional Prompt Global Strike program of the DoD, which aimed to develop conventional weapons that can hit a target in less than an hour from any part of the world.

The glider, traveling at hypersonic speed, was aimed at Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific and was supposed to cover the 3,500 miles in less than an hour.

In 2011, the U.S. Army had been successfully tested a hypersonic weapon prototype.
