Brussels demands answers from Tehran over nuclear program, EU detentions

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas held her first conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi since taking office in December, focusing on Tehran’s nuclear program.
Kallas said on social media platform X that she stressed the importance of a diplomatic approach and de-escalation in the region.
She also urged Iran to halt its military support to Russia and raised concerns over the detention of EU citizens in Iran on espionage charges, warning that future relations between Brussels and Tehran would depend on progress in these areas.
Previous EU envoys involved in nuclear talks with Iran included Javier Solana (1999–2009) and Federica Mogherini (2014–2019), who served as key intermediaries in dialogue between Tehran and the West.
