Trump: U.S. may let Europe lead on Ukraine if peace talks stall
20.05.2025 08:55

U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States will cede leadership in peace efforts to Europe if there is no substantial progress in ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump said the conflict "should have remained a European issue" and that the U.S. "should not have intervened." He said he is open to increasing arms supplies to Ukraine but believes in the possibility of a peaceful resolution.

Following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine would "immediately begin talks on a ceasefire and, more importantly, on a full end to the war." He described the tone of the conversation as "excellent" and said both sides were interested in expanding trade after the conflict ends.

Putin confirmed Russia’s readiness to discuss a memorandum with Ukraine that could form the basis of a future peace deal. However, Moscow insists on Ukraine’s neutral status and addressing the "root causes" of the conflict.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said Trump is "frustrated with both sides" and is considering secondary sanctions against Moscow. U.S. Vice President JD Vance questioned the sincerity of Russia’s peace intentions and said the U.S. expects concrete proposals from Moscow.
