Durov accuses French intel of pressure via Telegram

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has accused French intelligence of attempting to use the messaging platform for geopolitical purposes in Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania.

Durov said representatives of France’s DGSE intelligence service requested IP data of terrorism suspects but were primarily focused on silencing conservative voices in Romania ahead of the presidential election.

DGSE confirmed that meetings with Durov took place, stating they were meant to “remind him of the company’s responsibilities in preventing terrorism and child pornography.” The agency denied any efforts to interfere in electoral processes.

Romania’s presidential runoff was held on May 18. Pro-European candidate Nicușor Dan won with 53.62% of the vote, defeating far-right leader George Simion, who received 46.38%.
